The active contour model algorithm is capable of detecting the intracranial boundary in MR images of the head. Provided an initial guess of the boundary is available, the implementations presented herein converge on the ``true'' boundary reasonably quickly. The algorithm is therefore a good candidate for a final step in a segmentation procedure.
