Moderator: This set leads off with a classic problem: do you make a takeout double over a preempt with imperfect shape? The panel resoundingly say yes, once again.
Jeff Meckstroth: 4NT. What a nightmare of a bidding problem. If I double, partner will bid 4S most of the time. It's very dangerous to bid. It's equally dangerous not to bid.
Barry Rigal: Dbl. Who knows? Partner may have more than five spades or a two-suiter. I'll say the devil made me do it. Passing is like landing on the head of a needle, I think. Will I sit for 4S if it is doubled? Glad you didn't ask!
Geoff Hampson: Pass. I have no appealing bid and there's that dreaded second heart.
Andrew Krywaniuk: Pass. Lots of points, but this is insufficient shape to come in at the 5-level. Even double would be better than 4NT here.
Eugene Chan: Pass. I will be happy if we go plus. Opps could be stealing us blind but we could just as easily be minus big time by competing.
Anssi Rantamaa: Dbl. . . for penalty expecting partner to lead trumps.
David Waterman: Dbl. Very close between Dbl and 4NT. 4S should play ok even opposite SJ x x x x.
Gilbert Lambert: Pass. Dble for penalty! Just kidding. I don't see a plus for us on offense, so I am passing.
Jake Grabow: Pass. To double will result in 4S, 4NT to minor but partner can be broke - in any case it comes back to partner again.
Aidan Ballantyne: Pass. 4NT is too unilateral. In a perfect world partner balances, possibly with 4S.
Larry Meyer: Dbl. I will put a small club in with my spades when I put my hand down as dummy in 4S.
Ig Nieuwenhuis: Pass. Partner rarely has enough to let us make while we will probably get a plus defending.
Roy Bolton: Pass. East may have a big hand. Bidding could lead to disaster.
Plarq Liu: 4NT. Unusual NT, try my luck in the minors.
Beverley Candlish: 4NT. It is a toss up between double and 4NT asking partner to bid a minor suit. The danger is in doubling, if partner doesn't take it for penalty, she may bid spades.
Bob Todd: Dbl. I don't think a panel will pass and take their plus.
Chris Diamond: Pass. . . unlikely to be the winner in a bidding contest, but it's essentially a balanced hand looking for a 5-level contract if I bid.
Kf Tung: Dbl. Pre-empts work. They work better if we have 7+ tricks and let them get away.
Timothy Wright: Pass. It would be great to play optional (or penalty) doubles here. But we don't. Stay fixed, collect +50 and hope the other South gets too high.
Amiram Millet: Pass. I hope we can set them.

Moderator: This time the panel is split right down the middle: to pass or to lurch onward in search of . . . ?
Larry Cohen: 5C. I am persuaded by my singleton heart and fitting SK.
Mike Lawrence: 4S. I have a liking for 4S because (1) if partner has decent spades, it may be our only game; (2) the vul is right for the opponents to save, and (3) it's the cheapest available game. But a lot can go wrong with 4S, too. Glad it's matchpoints.
Jill Meyers: 4NT. . . which I think should be interpreted as both minors unless I correct to 5S, which I play with most partners as a slam try in spades.
Kerri Sanborn: Pass. I always want to bid, but I can't demand the five level with these suits.
The Sutherlins: Dbl. We have extra strength and distribution, including moderate support in spades. Let's hear from partner. Perhaps he has a six-card spade suit, perhaps even longer, and he will be able to bid spades again.
Andrew Krywaniuk: Pass. This is a nice hand, but still not worthy of unilateral action.
Eugene Chan: Pass. If partner has a real hand, he will not sell out to 4H.
David Waterman: 5C. What else can you possibly do? This is why people preempt.
Gilbert Lambert: Pass. If partner can't act again, we can't go plus on offense. I have too many losers.
Aidan Ballantyne: 5C. It's a bidder's game.
Larry Meyer: Dbl. Ask pard for his advice - rebid his suit, bid a minor, or pass for penalty.
Ig Nieuwenhuis: 5C. Don't need much to make this.
Roy Bolton: 5C. Pass is the safe bid, but this is matchpoints.
Plarq Liu: 4NT. I have something in the minors. Since we have not agreed on trumps, this is the unusual notrump.
Beverley Candlish: Dbl. I doubt East can make 4H. North South appears to have the other suits nicely covered.
Chris Diamond: Pass. If a double was a sort of snapdragon I might try it since it would be fairly descriptive, but I don't think it is.
Kf Tung: Pass. Pard, I don't have much extra. Can you take care of us?
Timothy Wright: 4S. I see votes for 4NT or 5C, but since partner has 5+ spades, 4S rates to be the best matchpoint gamble.
Amiram Millet: 4S. I'll punish 5H.

Moderator: The panel are evenly split between the shape-showing 2D and the value-showing 3H.
Don Stack: 2D. A 2H rebid is more likely to end the auction than 2D. If we can get partner to bid over 2D, then we can follow up with 3H.
Roger Lee: 3H. Bit of an overbid, but 2H is just as big of an underbid. I normally bid my side four-card suit in this situation, but here the hearts are good enough that I'll just hide my hand.
Geoff Hampson: 2H. My texture is wrong to try and start with 2D and I think 3H is too much.
Andrew Krywaniuk: 2D. I'm prepared to treat this as a *good* 6-4.
Eugene Chan: 3H. A slight overbid. Partner has denied spades so this is multi-purpose. Simultaneously invitational and pre-emptive!
Anssi Rantamaa: 2D. If partner can eke out 2N were going to 3N.
Gilbert Lambert: 2D. It has always worked well for me to show my second suit on minimum hands.
Aidan Ballantyne: 3H. Keeps the spades out and is about right on values.
Larry Meyer: 2D. Bid out my shape.
Ig Nieuwenhuis: 2D. . . and 3H after pard's rebid, a constructive maximum is what I'll show.
Roy Bolton: 3H. Good enough to jump to the 3-level. Also shutting out the E-W spade suit.
Plarq Liu: 3H. I prefer emphasis on hearts.
Beverley Candlish: 2H. I don't know where partner's points are. I will wait for partner's next bid (hopefully).
David Gordon: 2D. Bid 6-4-6.
Chris Diamond: 3H. I like the hand and I'd like to make invitations in both hearts and NT, but I can only do one.
Kf Tung: 3D. I have 7+ tricks.
Timothy Wright: 2D. With a worse hand, I would rebid 2H, but I will happily bid 3H here over either a 2H preference or a 3C runout.
Amiram Millet: 2D. Too strong for 2H.

Moderator: LHO didn't make a Michaels call, nor did he make a takeout double. Partner couldn't muster up a negative double and so far, right has nothing to say. Where are the spades?
Mel Colchamiro: 2NT. Partner must have 'a million' spades, so for me, it's 'what, me worry?'
Cynthia Handley: 2D. With two viable trump suits, I'd like to get both of them into the auction.
Daniel Korbel: 4H. I need basically nothing to make 4H: Either red queen should be more than enough. I don't want to give anyone a chance to bid spades. It's just too bad if partner has a bunch of diamonds headed by the ace.
Steve Robinson: 3H. Do I pass just because I have a singleton spade? Partner needs to hold very little for me to make 4H.
August Boehm: Dbl. With much ground to cover, a space-saving start seems in order.
Andrew Krywaniuk: 3H. Hopefully this is high enough to keep them out of spades.
Eugene Chan: Dbl. All good hands start with double. Will correct partner's probable 2S to 3H. Failure to reopen with double should suggest a club void.
Gilbert Lambert: 2D. I do have a good hand, but LHO has cards over me. I should be careful here.
Stuart Carr: 3D. 2NT may work better if partner has spade stoppers.
Aidan Ballantyne: 4H. Take my chances.
Larry Meyer: 2D. Bid out my shape.
Ig Nieuwenhuis: 2H. . . and later (if necessary) I'll introduce diamonds.
Roy Bolton: Dbl. A dble and a re-bid of hearts should show my strength.
Plarq Liu: 2D. Offer a choice to partner.
Beverley Candlish: 2H. With my singleton spade I am going to need lots of trumping power.
Chris Diamond: 2H. No negative double and I don't think he has a penalty pass, so he has very little. I'll probably overbid 3D over their next bid since we likely have a fit. The real danger is that they have a spade fit and might find it.
Kf Tung: 2D. My hand is good for another bid and I have diamonds too. I may bid again if there is one more chance.
Timothy Wright: 3H. The lack of spade bids calls for caution, but needing only xxx=Qxx in the reds from partner for game to be worth bidding calls for bravery.
Amiram Millet: Pass. . . before they find spades.

Moderator: With all this, the panel feel they need to catch up.
Steve Weinstein: 3H. I want to show a great hand and offer a choice of strains. A direct 4S wouldn't suggest anything more than a hand that got much better because of club fillers. The 2-step approach of cuebid then 4S suggests honor-doubleton and a good club fit.
Andrew Krywaniuk: 3H. BBS does not give us any concrete inference from partner's failure to Michaels. There is still the risk of 4S suffering an immediate trump promotion.
Eugene Chan: 3H. We are not sure why partner did not Michaels. The 3H cue bid should provide clarity.
David Waterman: 3H. I would have bid 2S right away. Not sure how that would have worked.
Gilbert Lambert: 4C. Partner could have a shapely minimum. I will give him a chance to pass if we don't have game.
Yue Su: 3H. Game forcing.
Aidan Ballantyne: 3H. Got some catching up to do since I forgot to bid over 1S.
Larry Meyer: 4C. Support with support.
Roy Bolton: 4C. Have to raise but 5C would be too much.
Plarq Liu: 5C. We can make it, I guess.
Beverley Candlish: Pass. I would like to bid 3S, however, partner will be forced to trump hearts seriously depleting his stash. Clubs looks like a better bet.
Chris Diamond: 3H. This hand just got gigantic.
Kf Tung: 4C. You will love my cards, pard, and go to game if you want.
Timothy Wright: 5C. I think my hand got a lot better.
Amiram Millet: Pass. This may be our best score.
