Moderator: You can't (or choose not to) bid in first seat. Do you really want to come in, red, opposite an admittedly-under-pressure-passing partner at the four level?
Daniel Korbel: 4S. I can't resist, but I'm prepared to apologize if I'm wrong. 4S by a passed hand would be played by a lot of partnerships as showing a second suit - improving our chances to land on our feet.
Roger Lee: Pass. It seems too speculative to me to bid. We have a lot of defense and no assurance of a fit.
Stephen Vincent: Pass. The advantages of bidding 4S over 4H in this sort of auction are well known but there are limits. Partner, with heart shortage was unable to act and it seems likely RHO is bidding on strength.
Brooke Wheelan: Pass. Partner is void in hearts and didn't double! No future for us.
Larry Meyer: 4S. My diamond void plus pard's likely heart void could easily produce 10 tricks.
Stuart Carr: 4S. Possible that both or neither side make game, so this risks the phantom sac!
Andrew Krywaniuk: Dbl. There is a fair chance a diamond lead will set the contract. 4NT may face entry problems if they run.
Ian Greig: Pass. With better spade suit texture this is a 2S opening for me. As it is it looks like two potential spade tricks in defense.
Perry Khakhar: Pass. With my heart holding, it is most likely that partner will balance if it is right. However, I see no reason to act ahead of partner. Can't save partner from bidding 5D, if takeout is correct.
Mike Roberts: 4S. I might not do this as an unpassed hand.
Timothy Wright: Pass. I've got a 9-count and LHO is weak. Partner couldn't overcall or double. Ergo, RHO has the good hand I need partner to have to give 4S a chance.
Ig Nieuwenhuis: Pass. I passed and partner could not do anything. Yes we may have a big fit, but we lack the controls to take a lot of tricks.
Chris Diamond: Pass. I want to bid 4S but if pard has enough of a fit to make this work I should get another chance.
David Gordon: 4S. Your partner will infer that you are 2-suited because you are a passed hand.
Amiram Millet: Pass. Don't start a war you can't win. They have at least 5H.
Plarq Liu: Pass. I would not compete after North's voluntary pass. He might have a flat opening bid.
Beverley Candlish: Pass. What can I do after 4H, vulnerable and no bid from partner? Pass and hope to somehow set the contract.
Kf Tung: 4S. . . the correct bid when total tricks are 19 or more. If you pass, you may not find the save when pard has a weak unbalanced hand.
Bob Todd: 4S. This is dangerous (maybe insane) but it is dangerous to pass also.

Moderator: The panel diverge on this problem, differentiating between a direct 4S, and 3S or a maximal double.
Larry Cohen: 3S. I prefer this way to show extras as opposed to doubling again (which I might do with only three spades). I don't want to bury partner in case he has something like SK Q x x x and out. If he has another useful card, he can raise to four.
Allan Falk: Dbl. Normally this shows only three spades, but I did make a takeout double for the black suits. I think this is a game try, leaving 3S to be competitive. I'd bid 3S without the DA, so double it is.
Don Stack: 4S. . . because with as little as SK and CQ in partner's hand, game is a virtual lock. Passing 2S or raising to 3S has no appeal with this moose of a hand.
Brooke Wheelan: 3S. Don't punish partner for bidding.
Larry Meyer: 4S. Partner's free bid probably shows enough for us to make game.
Andrew Krywaniuk: Dbl. I've already shown my shape, so this basically a maximal double.
Ian Greig: Dbl. Double should keep everything in the mix (principally -530 I imagine).
Perry Khakhar: 4S. What constitutes a free bid? I hate my heart holding, but if partner thinks that the hand is pure, who am I to argue? Besides, the opponents may wish to sacrifice! Let's see.
Mike Roberts: 3S. Feels like enough. Partner isn't barred.
Timothy Wright: 3S. I'm worth a game try, but I'm not hanging partner; a second double should be a better hand than this.
Ig Nieuwenhuis: 4S. This has play opposite SK, DK. Partner should have more. As it is IMPs I'll take my chance at game.
Chris Diamond: 4S. 3S sounds competitive. The spade fit is too big for a second double. So 4S and hope for a bit of luck even if it is NV.
David Gordon: 4S. The free 2S bid gives you enough to try 4S at IMPs.
Amiram Millet: 4S. This will usually make.
Plarq Liu: 4S. We have game value. Bid game.
Beverley Candlish: 3S. . . hoping opponents will go to 4H and I would quickly double.
Kf Tung: Dbl. Tell the opponents to back off next time while allowing pard to compete to 3S.

Moderator: With this hand loaded with playing strength, eight panelists make a 4S cuebid.
August Boehm: 4NT. . . to show the minors, emphasizing diamonds.
Jill Meyers: 5D. I'm too good for 4D, not good enough for 6D. I have a lot of playing strength. Partner will play me for short spades and hopefully be able to evaluate his hand.
The Sutherlins: 4S. . . to let partner know that we want to reach at least five of a minor. We may go for seven. Partner should realize that we have slam interest.
Stephen Vincent: 4D. It seems likely that partner has 4 spades as well as 4+ hearts, reducing the prospect of a minor suit fit.
Larry Meyer: 4D. 7-card suit with 3 of the top 5 and good intermediates, plus void in opponents' suit argue for bidding on.
Andrew Krywaniuk: 4C. Partner could easily have 5 clubs and no diamond fit.
Perry Khakhar: 4D. What do you call a 7 card suit? Trumps! We may be better in 5D than 5C which I plan to bid if I can next. If partner is 4414, cross ruff may produce 11 tricks.
Mike Roberts: 5D. Thought about 6D, actually. 4S would just confuse the issue.
Timothy Wright: 4C. I don't have room to show 7-4 in the minors, but I can at least suggest a strong 5-4 or 6-4.
Ig Nieuwenhuis: 5D. Either 3 queens (not SQ) or HA and CQ give this a good chance. 6D could be right, but unlikely with passed partner.
Chris Diamond: 4S. Too many things to describe or find out. I will try to guess right next round.
David Gordon: 4S. Should be enough to drive to slam in a minor.
Amiram Millet: 5D. If there is 6D I hope partner can go on.
Plarq Liu: 4C. Bid our second suit. It would be better to play 4-4 trumps than 7-1 trumps.
Beverley Candlish: 4C. Hopefully we can find a game in my nice 7 card diamond suit. By my showing clubs instead of hearts, partner will know my diamonds are a real suit.
Kf Tung: 4C. You have extras and you have clubs. Sorry, you cannot go for 3N but pard should figure out the next step.
Bob Todd: 5D. . . and 6C over 5S.

Moderator: Time to guess again.
Steve Weinstein: 3NT. I have no tricks and no stopper. What's the problem?
Geoff Hampson: 4C. If they were nonvulnerable, I would try 3NT, but that is too risky here. I'm bidding clubs rather than diamonds because it is difficult to correct diamonds to clubs.
Mel Colchamiro: Pass. Guessing which minor to bid at the four level borders on suicide. If they score it up, I'll humbly apologize.
Larry Meyer: 3NT. Take out the takeout doubles. Hoping pard has HJ x x or better.
Andrew Krywaniuk: 4C. Even vulnerable at IMPs, this doesn't strike me as a game-forcing hand.
Perry Khakhar: 4H. Pick a minor partner. If partner has 5 spades, we have left room for him to bid 4S.
Mike Roberts: 3S. Don't want to punish partner, don't want to risk a non-fit minor bid. Secretly, I think pass is right.
Timothy Wright: 4D. . . instead of 4C in case partner cue-bids next.
Ig Nieuwenhuis: 3NT. I will run if doubled, but most likely game to make.
Chris Diamond: 4C. This question is getting old since there's never a right answer. Predict that the ''admire the 3NT bidders'' statement will be rolled out.
David Gordon: 4C. Poor heart holding downgrades this hand.
Amiram Millet: 3S. Hope it's better than 4C. Discounting HQ.
Plarq Liu: 4C. Choices between equally bad bids.
Beverley Candlish: 4C. Tough, as I only have 3 little spades and partner may only have 4. I would start with a club bid.
Kf Tung: 4C. 3S is not enough and 3N is too risky. 4C is safer than pass, and pard should figure out the next step.
Bob Todd: 3NT. What I would bid at the table.

Moderator: Another fairly evenly divided panel.
Jeff Meckstroth: Pass. Will pass first and double subsequently.
Barry Rigal: Dbl. Pass and then double sounds like takeout, and not this hand. But if my partner told me that my double was clearly long diamonds, I might not be able to argue with him. Who am I kidding? I can argue with anyone.
Larry Meyer: Pass. Opps are welcome to play in any of my 3 good 4-card suits.
Andrew Krywaniuk: Dbl. Showing extra values and/or discouraging a diamond lead.
Perry Khakhar: Pass. Looks like a misfit, and half a deck per side. If partner has diamonds, he will bid them. I do not wish to rescue them.
Mike Roberts: Pass. Pass then double = gotcha. Double shows defence, but isn't a command.
Timothy Wright: Dbl. Partner's 1NT is often not balanced; we'll do better looking for +300 on defense than looking to play in no trumps.
Ig Nieuwenhuis: Dbl. Trying for 500 or more; should partner run I'll correct to NT, but this is for penalties.
Chris Diamond: Dbl. Ok what's the trick?
David Gordon: Dbl. Take your digit.
Uday Maitra: Pass. Wait for West to bid the major and then when it comes round Dbl for penalties for partner to lead a trump through.
Amiram Millet: 3NT. Can't see another bid here.
Leonid Bossis: Pass. I'm going to double 2M by West. If North competes with 3C over 2M, will bid 3NT.
Plarq Liu: 2NT. We can beat East with our tenaces in majors.
Beverley Candlish: 3NT. With my two nice major suits, I would jump to 3NT cutting out any response by West.
Kf Tung: Pass. . . and then you can double them when they struggle to 2H or 2S. You can only defend 2D undoubled.
