Moderator: When this problem was posed in the District 8 Problem Solvers forum, there was a dead tie between 2 and pass. Votes were also cast for 3 and 4. Nearly all of our panelists, however, chose 2.
Larry Cohen: 2. Aside from patterning out and showing a good hand, the best reason for bidding 4 is that we might have a 4-4 spade fit - much better than a 4-3 heart fit. If I didn't have extras, I'd reluctantly pass 2.
Mike Lawrence: Pass. Tough. If you wish to bid, 2 is the way. But only if it is not forcing. If East had passed, I wouldn't voluntarily get us to 3 because I have only 3-card heart support. I choose pass because I am not in a position to guarantee safety at the 3-level.
Rose Marie Clermont: 4. Does bidding hearts twice promise 6 hearts???
Stephen Vincent: 2. Worth another call. Hope partner will be able to figure out I don't have much of a club holding.
Martin Henneberger: 2. With nothing wasted in clubs I think my hand is worth another call. Partner could still have 4 spades. I will try a 2 bid now and see what develops.
Larry Meyer: 2. I have a little extra, so I should bid a little extra.
Andrew Krywaniuk: 2. I'm torn here since 4 might be dead on a trump lead, but I don't see the panel selling out at the 2-level.
Ian Greig: 2. Regret not opening this 1NT.
Mike Roberts: 2. So descriptive I can't pass it up.
Perry Khakhar: 2. This hand has plenty of playing strength. Must make a try! Even a minimum Moysian fit will produce well unless they lead a trump.
Paul Mcmullin: 3. I'd LIKE to bid game here, but partner may have rotten hearts and a minimum.
Brian Zietman: 3. Partner sounds weak but maybe I can nudge him to game.
Ig Nieuwenhuis: 2. I owe partner a try, especially if he is 4-4 in the majors. We might lose some IMPs opposite a 3433, but with the natural 2 that is highly unlikely.
David Gordon: 2. Make a natural game try. Clubs are sitting well.
Uday Maitra: Pass. We could be missing a 4-4 spade fit and playing in a 4-3 heart fit. But on trump leads this may be the limit.
Amiram Millet: 3. 4 is a good possibility. Otherwise - a sound save against 3 by E/W.
Plarq Liu: 3. Invite to game. We have cross ruff potential in the minors.
Beverley Candlish: 3. I have described my heart support to partner, now I would invite with 3.
Kf Tung: 2NT. Pard can choose 3, 3N or 4.
Bob Todd: 2. This should show my shape with extras and no wasted values in clubs. At IMPs it is worth a bid.

Moderator: There's no mistaking 4NT in this auction as showing anything but the minors, and most of the panelists lean that way.
Daniel Korbel: 4NT. Takeout doubles are for takeout when you have the values to hope to make your contract. I will let partner choose between the minors.
Mel Colchamiro: Pass. . . and lead the K. The five level is no lock: two low hearts - eek! My downside is losing 8 IMPs vs a making 5 or 5. The upside could be even more if we go plus 300 instead of minus 100.
Stephen Vincent: Pass. The major suit holdings suggest defending.
Craig T. Wilson: 4NT. Take out for minors.
Martin Henneberger: 4NT. I have a reasonable expectation of making 5 of a minor, and since 6 isn't out of the question opposite a super hand from pard, making a speculative pass red vs white is unattractive.
Monica Angus: 4NT. Minors.
Brooke Wheelan: 4NT. I hope this is for the minors.
Larry Meyer: 4NT. Ask pard to bid his better minor.
Andrew Krywaniuk: 5. We won't get rich defending at this vulnerability. It is seems automatic to bid 4NT, but here I have a definite preference. (What if we need to pitch club losers on spades?)
Mike Roberts: 4NT. Almost passed, but I think we'll make 5 of a minor.
Perry Khakhar: Pass. Decent gamble. No guarantee that we can make a 5 level game, and I know what to lead!
Paul Mcmullin: 4NT. Should be pick-a-minor; partner can bid 5 with a monster.
Brian Zietman: 4NT. Unusual.
Ig Nieuwenhuis: 4NT. Since I can pass with hearts and bid 4 this must be both minors.
David Gordon: 4NT. Not enough difference in minors to insist on 1 over the other.
Uday Maitra: 4NT. Pick your 4 card minor.
Louk Verhees: Pass. Very much a matter of style. You either pass or bid 4NT.
Amiram Millet: 5. Will be better than pass. All my assets are working.
Plarq Liu: 4NT. Minors. Double for take out up to 4 and we're distributional.
Beverley Candlish: 5. I don't have a heart stopper and diamonds is my longest suit. Partner has to have a very strong hand.
Kf Tung: Pass. A sure plus is more important than a dubious minor suit game.

Moderator: We could back up and debate the 2 call, but what's done is done. Teetering on the dangerous upper edge of the two level, most of the panelists pass.
Geoff Hampson: Pass. I have no certain fit. My hand is weak for this bidding so I get out now.
Roger Lee: 3. If partner has diamond shortness, I likely should have passed 2NT. But I will take our best chance at a plus when partner has two diamonds and a fair hand.
Stephen Vincent: Pass. I do not like the direction in which this hand is going.
Martin Henneberger: 3. The 2 bid was ill-advised and put us in this ugly predicament.
Larry Meyer: 3. My diamonds will only be useful if they are trump.
Andrew Krywaniuk: Pass. Pass and hope the opps don't double.
Laurence Betts: Pass. 2 is absurd.
Mike Roberts: Pass. I would never have bid 2. Now I'm getting out while the getting is good.
Perry Khakhar: 3. Our hand is useless unless diamonds are trumps. I will pass 3NT if Pard bids it, expecting A x x.
Paul Mcmullin: Pass. I'll pull to 3 if we're doubled; doesn't seem like a 7-or-9 hand.
Brian Zietman: Pass. If we get doubled I would be inclined to escape to 3.
Ig Nieuwenhuis: 3. Safety first: partner: I have diamonds and a minimum.
David Gordon: 3. 2NT denies 4 hearts. Your diamond suit is not good for notrump.
Louk Verhees: Pass. Very shaky diamonds to rebid. Partner looks like having at least 9 black cards. So either pass or 3.
Amiram Millet: Pass. I'd open 2 here.
Plarq Liu: 3. Prefer trump contract.
Beverley Candlish: Pass. It seems that partner must have the other suits covered and is comfortable with NT. I cannot bid 3NT with my 7 points and poor holding.
Kf Tung: 3. Ask pard to pass.
Bob Todd: Pass. I think I have done enough. Guessing to bid 3 can only make things worse.

Moderator: The panel make the "book bid" of 1NT.
August Boehm: 1NT. . . semi-constructive. The heart spots are not good enough for a one-level conversion.
The Sutherlins: Pass. When partner has 12 points, 1NT and 1 are photo finishes. When partner has 14-16, we become a big favorite to beat 1.
Martin Henneberger: 1NT. This looks right on values. My spots in hearts aren't good enough to hope to penalize. I will make a normal value showing bid, and avoid any attempt at heroics.
Larry Meyer: 1NT. The main thing about my hand is that I have hearts well stopped.
Andrew Krywaniuk: Pass. Our best chance to go plus. If West sends it back then I will reconsider.
Mike Roberts: 1NT. Heart spots feel wrong for pass.
Perry Khakhar: 1NT. Pass may be the best option, but I am not that brave. Uptricks would be 200 each!
Paul Mcmullin: 1. Lesser of unpleasant choices.
Brian Zietman: 1NT. Too dangerous to convert to penalty.
Ig Nieuwenhuis: 1NT. I'd rather have a heart less as that would give more trick-taking power, but passing is too dangerous.
David Gordon: 1NT. I prefer a better heart suit to pass the take out dbl.
Louk Verhees: Pass. 2 choices: Pass or 1NT. If pard passes 1NT I probably wished I had passed the double.
Plarq Liu: Pass. No suit to bid.
Beverley Candlish: 1NT. I have a nice heart suit and nothing else to bid.
Kf Tung: 1NT. You have enough to play 1N and pard can bid more if he has better cards.

Moderator: The panel provide a wide variety of options on this distributional hand.
Mike Lawrence: 3. An unusual start. If partner bids 3NT, I can if I wish, bid 4. Can't do that if I open 4. This is not a hand I am familiar with.
Barry Rigal: 4. We don't play this as Gerber, do we? My opening bid may be restricted by my spot cards. 2 and 6 seem slight overstatements, so it's 4 or pass. I tried the latter once and didn't like it.
Steve Robinson: 1. Because I don't know how many clubs to bid, I might as well go constructive with 1.
Kerri Sanborn: 4. Gotta bid 'em up! 5 would be too much - except at favorable vulnerability.
Don Stack: Pass. I refuse to preempt us out of our spades if there is indeed a fit there. This is a great hand to pass and then bid a lot later.
Stephen Vincent: Pass. There'll be plenty of opportunity to bid later.
Martin Henneberger: Pass. I am interested to see what the panel does but for me this is a clear pass. Opening 1 is my only other consideration. Preempting any number of clubs with 4 spades, a void, broken suit, and defense is just not in my repertoire.
Monica Angus: Pass. Will await developments. I'm not going to pre-empt clubs when spades may be where we should be.
Larry Meyer: Pass. Give pard the opportunity to bid spades.
Andrew Krywaniuk: Pass. This hand just has too many strikes against it for a preempt, and a couple of surprises on defense that I'd rather not give away.
Laurence Betts: Pass. I'll still be 4108 at my next opportunity to bid.
Mike Roberts: 1. Misdescriptive, but so is everything.
Perry Khakhar: 4. What do you call an 8 card suit? Trumps! Just find the right level and bid it! This level is my choice. Plus I may be able to contribute a little to the defense.
Paul Mcmullin: Pass. WAY too much potential to preempt - let's see how the auction goes.
Brian Zietman: Pass. Despite the rule of 20 I don't know the value of my K. If I bid any number of clubs we will miss our possible spade fit. Wait and see how the bidding develops.
Ig Nieuwenhuis: 3. What else? Ok 4, but this 8-card-suit feels like only 7.
David Gordon: Pass. Against better players I might blast out 4 or 5. But since I have a healthy ego...
Louk Verhees: 4. Nasty one where anything can be right.
Amiram Millet: 1. This hand isn't a preempt.
Plarq Liu: 4. Best preemptive.
Richmond Williams: Pass. This hand is not going anywhere but the auction will.
Beverley Candlish: 4. I can't describe my hand any better: an 8 card suit and a weak hand. If partner has a good hand, she can bid game, otherwise the contract belongs to the enemy.
Kf Tung: Pass. Wait. Your side needs more room to bid than the opponents!
Bob Todd: Pass. This is a wait and see hand.
