Moderator: As Lawrence predicts, the panel is all over the place with this hand.
Jill Meyers: 2. I hate this problem! I think it is close between 1NT (appealing at matchpoints) and 2, but I would bid 2.
Kerri Sanborn: 1NT. We are unlikely to miss a game if partner cannot bid, and this might leave me well placed if there is another round of the auction.
The Sutherlins: Pass. The opponents probably have an eight- to 10-card heart fit, which they may or may not find. If West passes, we will probably be able to collect +300 at a minimum. Because game is far from certain, this should be an okay result.
Stephen Vincent: 3. 2NT is about right on values but I can't bring myself to bid it with a void.
Martin Henneberger: 2. Takeout doubles are meant to be taken out, especially at the 1 level. We could be cold for a minor suit grand slam so passing 1 seems ridiculous.
Chris Diamond: Pass. A misfit and not enough to guarantee game. Might as well try for a plus; the heart void is worrisome.
Larry Meyer: 1NT. Showing spade stopper, at least 8 HCP, and no 5-card suit of my own.
Eugene Chan: Pass. Take my plus. It won't be a zero. It won't be a top.
Andrew Krywaniuk: 2. With no easy way to locate our best fit, it is safer to start slow.
Aidan Ballantyne: Pass. Not sure how much to bid and how to find best strain, so for once I will pass a takeout double and go for it. Hope pard has reasonably good hearts and that pard leads a minor. If wrong, it's only a bad board.
Bob Kuz: Pass. Hoping for +100 vs +90 or +300 vs. +120.
Mike Roberts: 3. Pass is weird; I doubt I can beat this two, as their heart fit will act as trump substitutes.
Paul Mcmullin: 2. . . and then 2N over 2 by partner.
David Gordon: 2. I need a better suit to pass the double. I think I will start slow and take more bids later.
Tim Francis-Wright: 2. Ugh. At these colors, passing is taking a big position. 2 is an overbid and probably implies hearts. I would rather have something in reserve so I can bid clubs next round, so I'm going for 2 over 3.
Amiram Millet: 3. Intending to show also my clubs. We might belong (at least) in 6 of a minor.
Joel Forssell: Pass. Minors too weak; better wait for E/W to run and then catch them.
John Gillespie: 1NT. I prefer to be wrong in the highest scoring strain.
Brian Zietman: Pass. 4 down for 800 looks good.
Plarq Liu: 1NT. We have a good hand, it is better to be the declarer of notrump to hide heart void.
Beverley Candlish: 2NT. . . denying hearts and showing at least 9 points and tolerance for the other three suits.
Kf Tung: 1NT. Get ready for +120. The subsequent development will tell you about the game prospect.

Moderator: Nine panelists pass and nine double. All have strong opinions.
August Boehm: Dbl. Close to maximum defense plus minimal heart length. It's more of an action double than pure penalty or takeout.
Betty Ann Kennedy: 3. 3 may make so I'll take my chances on getting a plus score in 3.
Barry Rigal: Pass. You have got to be kidding me! Even thinking of bidding is an overbid. I strongly suggest a typo [in the problem].
Stephen Vincent: Pass. We've pushed them to the 3 level: I think that's enough on this rather average collection.
Martin Henneberger: Dbl. Anybody can bid 3 here, but I prefer to double. Double to me is co-operative takeout with extras and acts as a game try. Pard bid a free 2 so me competing to 3 wouldn't show extras.
Chris Diamond: Dbl. Shortish hearts and extra values double.
Anssi Rantamaa: 3. Down one doubled is better than 110 their way.
Larry Meyer: Pass. I have no reason to bid further.
Eugene Chan: 3. Looks like partner just has long hearts. Is down one good bridge?
Andrew Krywaniuk: Pass. I think the last 3 times I doubled in this situation the opponents made it.
Aidan Ballantyne: Dbl. Too many hard cards (ace-kings) to give up.
Bob Kuz: Pass. A on the table.
Mike Roberts: Dbl. I guess this could be down 2, so I have to protect our 110. Stupid matchpoints.
Paul Mcmullin: Dbl. We apparently have over 1/2 the deck, and the hand SHOULD be ours (even though the K seems poorly placed).
David Gordon: Dbl. This should suggest extra values with 3 hearts.
Tim Francis-Wright: 3. We might well have a 4-4 spade fit, but there's no way to get there.
Amiram Millet: 3. Partner will go on if we have a game.
John Gillespie: Pass. Don't punish pard for doing their job.
Brian Zietman: 3. Partner made a free bid over 1 - I take him for some values.
Plarq Liu: Dbl. Optional double.
Beverley Candlish: 3. Partner must have at least a 5 card suit. She can decide whether she wants to compete to 4.
Kf Tung: 3. You want to play 3 instead of doubling 3. Do not double and watch pard pulling his hair!

Moderator: The 3 bidders outweigh everyone else combined.
Mike Lawrence: 4. Partner is interested in something, and my hand has just grown for the first time in the auction. 3 is also acceptable, but only if it is agreed that I will not sit for 3NT.
Jeff Meckstroth: 3. This should describe my shape perfectly.
Don Stack: 3. It is tempting to bid notrump or suggest playing a Moysian fit by raising to 3.
The Gordons: 2NT. . . the middle road. Diamonds are wasted in a suit. It isn't 100% that partner has four spades, and if he does, it isn't 100% that spades are the right strain.
Stephen Vincent: 3NT. The hand's getting better. Tempting to bid 3 but it's not clear partner will interpret it 'correctly'.
Martin Henneberger: 3. Pard is making a game try and I will co-operate. This cannot be misunderstood as I've denied 4 spades already. This pattern bid allows pard to pick a 4 moysian, 3NT, or 5.
Chris Diamond: 2NT. Not quite sure where we're going. I'm tempted to raise to 3 since I can think of hands where 4 is the best game.
Anssi Rantamaa: 2NT. Fourth suit forcing?
Larry Meyer: 3NT. No guarantees, but worth a chance, especially vulnerable.
Eugene Chan: 2NT. Don't know where partner is going. Show my spade stopper.
Andrew Krywaniuk: 2NT. Whether to bid 2NT or 3NT probably depends on how light the 1 response could be.
Aidan Ballantyne: 2NT. Close to a 3NT bid but will go easy. Hopefully partner will play me for about this much as I would have bid 3 instead if weak.
Mike Roberts: 4. Assuming 2 is natural, partner can read my whole hand. Even if it isn't, he should be able to judge for clubs.
Paul Mcmullin: 3. Even with partner's apparent diamond shortage, I'm just not envisioning 11 tricks at clubs, and can't find 9 at NT.
David Gordon: 2NT. I might have wasted diamond values opposite shortness.
Amiram Millet: 2NT. For partner's decision if it's 3 or 3NT.
John Gillespie: 4. 3-4-1-5 is typical for pard with 16-ish. An invite with this shape is typical for me.
Brian Zietman: 3. Seems like partner is 4-4-1-4, but I cannot see game on here.
Plarq Liu: 3. We're facing a strong 3-4-1-5 hand. I'll rebid clubs to show our weakness.
Beverley Candlish: 2NT. Partner did not reverse. I would show my stopper in spades and minimum hand.
Kf Tung: 2NT. You have a spade stopper. Pard can choose 3NT, but 5 of a minor is still possible. Will pard take you for 3154 if you bid 3?

Moderator: Does passing constitute a conversion of the redouble to business? 13 panelists think so.
Larry Cohen: Pass. If partnership agreement dictates that passing is for business, I'd better do something else. I'd like to play that pass here means 'You got us in - you get us out.'
Steve Robinson: 1NT. I hope I get doubled in 1NT so I can redouble to find partner's best minor. I don't bid three-card majors if there is a reasonable alternative.
Karen Walker: 2. Pass is for penalty when sitting directly over the redoubler.
Stephen Vincent: Pass. You got us into this partner: you get us out of it. I can't see how the alternative interpretation: that pass should be for penalties, can be useful here.
Gilbert Lambert: Pass. I am passing if it is not for penalty. 2 otherwise.
Martin Henneberger: 1. Since pass to me here is penalty, I will bid the cheapest bid available, 1.
Chris Diamond: 2. Not quite enough for 1NT.
Anssi Rantamaa: Pass. You pick, partner!
Larry Meyer: Pass. Too weak to show my heart stopper, let pard describe his hand.
Eugene Chan: 2. Partner asked for my best suit and that suit is diamonds.
Andrew Krywaniuk: 1NT. The rare unusual 1NT.
Laurence Betts: 2. In my world pass = a desire to defend.
Aidan Ballantyne: 1. Would like to pass to show weakness but pard may think I had a trap pass of 1. Keeping it low. Wouldn't know which minor to bid. Good excuse to bid a three card suit.
Bob Kuz: 2. Announcing weakness. Playing with my favorite partner, pass is for penalty.
Mike Roberts: 2. An odd hand to hold here, but I think too many people play pass as penalty to risk it.
Paul Mcmullin: 2. . . and I'll pull partner's expected 2 cuebid to 3.
Tim Francis-Wright: 1. Get out low. I don't know if 1NT shows minors, but it definitely would after another double by West or East.
Amiram Millet: Pass. Better than guessing.
John Gillespie: 2. Yuk. Pass is to play and spades might be a 3-3 fit or lure pard into competing.
Brian Zietman: Pass. I am quite happy to let partner decide which suit he prefers.
Plarq Liu: Pass. Let our partner escape.
Beverley Candlish: 2. Keep it low and let partner bid his suit if necessary.
Kf Tung: 1. You do not want to defend 1 so you must bid over the redouble. 1N is overbid, 2 / 2 is a disaster if pard has only two. 1 will not be the last bid when pard has 3 spades, so 1 is probably the safest choice.

Moderator: Unable to bid diamonds naturally over RHO's 1 opener, most of the panelists simply waited a round, then bid 2. Unimaginative, perhaps, but unambiguous.
Mike Lawrence: 2NT. Normally 2NT would show hearts and clubs. However, if I had a good enough hand to show hearts and clubs now, I would have bid something the round earlier. This sequence should show the minors with emphasis on diamonds.
Bob Giragosian: 2. I think this is our hand and I want to give us the best chance to find the right spot. If partner bids, I will be able to show both suits.
Stephen Vincent: 2. You could have a game here but as yet there's no evidence of a fit: partner probably has quite a number of spades.
Gilbert Lambert: 1NT. Why did I not bid 2 the first time?
Martin Henneberger: 2. An impossible fancy 2 cue bid cannot be mistaken to show any hand that includes hearts as I passed 1. The only meaning that makes sense is a good hand with both minors.
Chris Diamond: 2. I can't figure out who's got what but I'm pretty sure the auction isn't over after 2 and I might still get my clubs in.
Larry Meyer: Dbl. . . protecting partner.
Eugene Chan: 2. We might be missing game. We might have a huge misfit. Bid what I (hope) can make.
Andrew Krywaniuk: 2. It would be nice to play 1NT as a generic 2-suited bid here. I don't think we play that.
Aidan Ballantyne: Pass. Maybe we make game, but then again perhaps they do (4). I believe RHO's bidding so I'll go quietly. Too much could go wrong if I bid.
Bob Kuz: 2. . . followed by clubs at any level. Why wasn't I bidding earlier?
Mike Roberts: 2NT. Beats me? I would have bid 2 the first time.
Paul Mcmullin: 2. This BETTER be natural here.
David Gordon: 2. The first bid is easy.
Tim Francis-Wright: 2. Ideally, we would have a bid to show minors (and 2NT may be it) but 2 is natural here.
Amiram Millet: 2. We might have 5 or more. Partner is very close to an opening.
Joel Forssell: 2. If partner bids or opps double, I can bid clubs.
John Gillespie: 2. I'll bid clubs next if I can but this has major mis-fit possibilities.
Brian Zietman: 2. . . intending to bid clubs on the next round. Then partner will understand that I have diamonds as I passed the 1 opening.
Plarq Liu: Dbl. Take out, this is unusual but it seems East psyched.
Beverley Candlish: 2. I would bid 2 and see if East or West will rebid their suits. If so, I will double.
Kf Tung: 2. Your safest bid. If required you can bid 3 later to compete over 2.
