Moderator: Partner doubled and bid 1 showing a good hand. You bid 1, but that didn't promise any values, and you have a useful hand.
Kai Zhou: 2. I still maintain the bidding since I have maximum for my 1 bid, plus pd may easily have 18+ with 6 card suit.
Eugene Chan: 2. Rebidding 2 tells partner I have a decent hand with a decent suit. WTP?
Aidan Ballantyne: 2. Perhaps I owe a spade but this is the straightforward and unambiguous approach to the most likely game of 4 (while not ruling out a path to 3NT).
Susan Peters: Pass. If partner's hand was that great he would have bid 2 or 2.
Martin Henneberger: 1NT. Other bids seem flawed. Describes overall shape and strength..stopper showing is for 3NT not 1NT.
Larry Meyer: 2. Making the bid I should have made earlier.
Mike Roberts: 3. Second choice 2. This is good enough to get to game, and I'll bid where I live.
Perry Khakhar: 2. I clearly have the values, but no clear bid. The best that I can do is make a descriptive bid and keep the bidding open for partner. It feels like I have left a little in reserve, but no other bid is very appetizing.
Bj Trelford: 2. I am not broke. I can make a free bid here to show values.
Chris Buchanan: 2. My best choice.
Bob Todd: 2. Partner has a good (but not too good) single suited takeout of 1.
Ranjan Bhaduri: 2. If partner has 17 points and a 6-carder spade, there might be a game. The 2 bid keeps things alive without giving a false impression of strength.
Jane Fyfe: 2. ..asking for club stopper for 3NT. We have game going values.
Chris Diamond: 3. Choosing to show values overemphasizing suit but all options flawed.
Bill Treble: 3. It's what I have...more straightforward than a nebulous cuebid.
Brian Zietman: 2. Showing maximum points (1 showed 0-7) and a 5-card diamond suit.

Moderator: This problem was posed incorrectly in The Bulletin. The one faced in Vancouver was a 2 bid by East. The one faced by the panel was a Pass by East. So, nobody gets a score other than 0. For interest sake only, your comments have been included.
Kai Zhou: 3. Other option was 2. I think 3 bid should to some extent show tolerance in hearts.
Eugene Chan: Dbl. Slightly off-shape responsive double but nothing else appeals.
Aidan Ballantyne: Dbl. I owe that spade again but seems the least of all evils.
Susan Peters: 3. Want to show partner that I have some values. Will pass 3 and bid 3NT if he bids 3.
Martin Henneberger: Pass. With values I want to enter the auction but how? Bidding is too dangerous.. 2 if I must bid. Besides the auction isn't over. Pard won't let them play 2 if it's right.
Bonny Lee: Dbl. Let partner pick the black suit or rebid his heart suit.
Larry Meyer: Dbl. May need to put a club in with my spades.
Mike Roberts: Dbl. .. if responsive. 2 otherwise. Not a very good hand.
Perry Khakhar: 3. Since I am an unpassed hand, I would think that this bid is at least constructive. I would like to bid notrumps but maybe partner can ask. I do not wish to complicate the hand with a cue bid that partner may mistake for heart support.
Bj Trelford: 3. I have a good hand. Bid naturally.
Chris Buchanan: Dbl. If I bid 2NT I would have to hold my nose and hope partner doesn't pass out from the fumes from this stinker.
Bill Treble: Dbl. .. followed by 2NT if partner bids 2 or 2.
Brian Zietman: 2NT. Inviting to game and showing a stopper in diamonds.

Moderator: This is a strange auction. Partner did not overcall 1, but now bids 3. You have a good hand, yet the opponents roll into 3NT. Many of the panelists were also confused.
Kai Zhou: 4. Pard did not overcall 1 or 2 in the first place, and I expect him to have 7 bagger to the 10 and probably void in Spade. I still have a chance of making 4, and 3NT looks frigid.
Eugene Chan: 5. This hand is sure to be played at the 5 level. I will get there first. 5 either invites 6 or is pre-emptive. In either case, I don't care!!
Aidan Ballantyne: Pass. I will guess that pard has long weak hearts and a spade void and they have a huge club fit. If I am wrong and 3 as stopper asking, pard should go back to 4 which should not be disastrous.
Susan Peters: 4. Expect to make this.
Martin Henneberger: 4. Partner's hearts must be long and weak like 10-seventh, else they would have bid the first time, so I'm a bidder. Could be a two way shot.
Larry Meyer: Pass. Hope to beat 3NT with a heart lead - afraid that 4 will make.
Mike Roberts: 4. I suspect this came from a director's ruling. My guess is that partner's hearts aren't good enough for 2 over 1. Whatever he meant, 4 is too obvious not to bid.
Perry Khakhar: 4. With all of these controls and fillers for partner's not overcallable suit, I believe that we may have reached the magic spot. I do not have any wastage in my own suit that partner hates (obviously!).
Bj Trelford: 4. I assume partner has a lot of hearts with no values. If partner has spades and this was a lead directer he will correct.
Chris Buchanan: Dbl. Partner bid right?
Bob Todd: 4. I am trusting partner to have long weak hearts which is why he didn't bid.
Ranjan Bhaduri: Pass. I've shown my hand already. Let partner decide.
Chris Diamond: 4. Can't see how 4 can be wrong, pard can't have enough for slam.
Bill Treble: 4. This shows a value 4, also could pave the way for a making slam if this is a freak hand.
Brian Zietman: 4. Close call between 4 and double of 3NT.

Moderator: The majority agrees with the pass of 3. Once you choose that call, you shouldn't bid 4 over 3. Doing so is letting the opponents push you to a contract that rates to fail. A minus score on this deal is surely a terrible matchpoint result.
Kai Zhou: Dbl. Despite bad 14 count with all the ugly QJs, the nature of MP cannot be changed, 140 looks good to you, but you are given a chance for 200.
Eugene Chan: Pass. Since I passed 3, I have no reason to bid anymore.
Aidan Ballantyne: Pass. Pard could have moved over 3. 4 now risks a zero though I have sympathy for that bid as it sounds like they did the right thing. But I will stay fixed and perhaps get more matchpoints than expected for giving in to the power of the spade suit.
Susan Peters: 4. I have good values for my double. Would have bid 4 over 3.
Martin Henneberger: Pass. Lebensohl is a great convention here for these types of auctions. Who can guess with accuracy whether pard has the goods or not.
Bonny Lee: 4. Partner made a free bid: he should have some points and a reasonable suit.
Larry Meyer: Pass. 1) Yes, bidding would show 16+. With 4432, 14 HCP, and 5 quacks, this hand is nowhere near that. 2) Pass, pard knows my hand and made a decision - I am in no position to overrule him.
Mike Roberts: Pass. 3 - Is this an opening lead problem? Seriously, even these days, do I have extras? You could make a case for double to protect your +140, but if that's the case, I can blame partner.
Perry Khakhar: Pass. I didn't bid the first time because, I don't believe that we can guarantee setting them in 4. Same still applies. I don't want to push them to game!
Bj Trelford: Dbl. They are hot. Matchpoints I am trying for +200 or more. Lead a trump.
Chris Buchanan: 4. Probably only getting spades a trick or maybe not at all. I wanted to bid 4 going in so I will do it know.
Ranjan Bhaduri: Pass. 4 MIGHT make (only have 2 defensive tricks), so don't want want to push into game.
Chris Diamond: Pass. Can't bring myself to hit it for 200 and I already chose not to bid.
Bill Treble: Pass. My defense is normal and partner had a chance to double....I'm not going to punish him for what might be a tactical 3 at favorable colors.
Brian Zietman: 4. Partner made a free bid so with my good hearts and no wasted values in spades looks like we have good chances of making.

Moderator: Even though you only have 12 high-card points, you have a nice playing hand. Should you make a minimum rebid, invite or force to game? The majority take the middle road and bid 3.
Kai Zhou: 4. .. a little bit aggressive but I do like my playing tricks in spades.
Eugene Chan: 2. Temporize with an artificial reverse. Then jump to 4 to imply heart shortage.
Aidan Ballantyne: 3. An underbid but my pard always accepts game and with the right cards she may visualize a slam (I will happily accept any slam try). 4, 4 or 4 now will often get us too high in slam.
Susan Peters: 5. How good are your spades?
Martin Henneberger: 4. I would like better spades however no spade raise describes this hand nor does 3.
Bonny Lee: 3. I can show the strong hand in subsequent bids, but the club suit is too strong not to inform partner.
Larry Meyer: 3. Invitational weasel bid - if pard's choice turns out wrong, it's all his fault.
Judi Carter: 3. .. a splinter.
Mike Roberts: 3. If, as I suspect, the opps' silence marks partner with a major 2-suiter, this hand might not be that great. A Goldilocks bid (2 too little, 4/H/C too much, 3 is just right).
Perry Khakhar: 4. Bidding what I think we can make opposite a scattered value minimum response. Partner is marked with 5+ Spades. But probably some wastage in Hearts as well. Partner will need significant extras for slam possibilities. I will cooperate if he continues.
Bj Trelford: 4. This shows 6 good clubs and 4 spades.
Chris Buchanan: 4. Shows 4-6 and a good hand. That is what I have.
Bob Todd: 3. The spades (maybe the hand) aren't quite strong enough for 4.
Ranjan Bhaduri: 4. Even if partner has 6 points, game is worth a shot. If partner is strong, then he should push on.
Jane Fyfe: 3. .. a mini splinter.
Chris Diamond: 4. Opps' silence suggests pard has at least 4 hearts, thus 5 spades. Can't really bid 4 in S A so I'll lie this way.
Bill Treble: 3. 4 or 4 is too rich....I'll mini-splinter and then insist on game.
Brian Zietman: 4. Ostensibly showing 18-19 but my heart void and 4 card trump support give me a powerhouse.
