Moderator: The majority of the panel see 4D as patterning out; the other half see a different application.
Jeff Meckstroth: 5D. I have no idea what partner is doing here so I will try and describe my hand.
Daniel Korbel: 4NT. It sounds like 4D might be suspect here as partner has no way to rebid spades again in a forcing manner. In fact, I think using 4D as a spade bid makes a lot of sense. My hand is great, although the spade void may not be what the doctor ordered.
Josh Donn: 4S. In my mind, 4D simply shows a good 4S bid: what else can you do if you are too good to simply bid 4S? With no spades myself and a minimum in high cards, this gives me an easy sign-off.
Sylvia Shi: 4H. Partner's 4D should be a slammish hand with spades. I don't think it shows diamonds because they could have bid 3D over 3C holding diamonds and spades. So my 4H is kind of like last train.
Martin Henneberger: 4NT. Although there is an argument to be made for 4D being natural and pattern-showing, a more common application is that it's a probe for the right strain. I will take the most flexible route by bidding 4NT now.
Eurydice Nours: 4NT. To play. Should not bid 3NT after 3S: bid 4C to show the shape.
Anssi Rantamaa: 5D. Maybe partner knows where he is going.
Christopher Diamond: 5D. For pard to be tossing out 4D now leads me to believe he has some wild shape like 7-5 in the pointies. He's essentially unlimited so even though 5D might be an awful MP spot and it might even have no play, I am obligated to show the best support I can have.
Larry Meyer: 5D. Can't pass, and all the other possible bids are worse.
Eugene Chan: 4NT. It is matchpoints, hence 4NT. Would have patterned out with 4C rather than 3NT.
Andrew Krywaniuk: 5D. Partner chose to bid S-S-D rather than S-D-S. I assume this shows slam interest, which I do not have.
Arun Chopra: 5D. Bad misfit. Stay low.
Hk Ho: 6NT. Pard shows 18/19 HCP and 2 suits min 5-5. Pard should have 14+ HCP for not passing 3NT. He must be looking for diamond control to bid slam. As we are void in spades, bid 6NT and hope pard will go to 7 with 3 more points.
David Gordon: 6D. Hope we are not missing the Grand.
Plarq Liu: 4H. Cuebid.
Chris Buchanan: 5D. Tough hand, I think partner is a good 6-4 or 7-4. This is forcing so I will bid the game where it looks like we have a fit. I think 12 tricks is too much of a stretch.
Peter Qvist: 5NT. Pick a slam.
Allan Simon: 6D. Partner's likely shape is 7-5 in the pointed suits.
Kf Tung: 6D. Partner wants a slam and you have the best diamonds he can hope for.

Moderator: The majority of the panel would have raised to 2S on their second turn. Given the auction shown, they draw the focus to the spade suit with 3S.
Steve Weinstein: 3S. I would have bid 2S. I have an exceptional hand for spades. I would have bid 3S over 2H. Given that I have twice underbid my spade support, I need to emphasize it now.
Larry Cohen: 3NT. I raise on three cards only if truly stuck. I've shown the diamonds, the spades and now the club stopper. Picture partner holding: SJ x x x x HK Q x x DK Q x Cx.
Jill Meyers: 4S. I need to come to life here. I would have raised to 2S before because I think that is our best chance of getting to a spade game, and my diamonds are so bad.
Barry Rigal: 3H. I would have bid 2S over 1S and 3S over 2H so I hate this problem. That said, I bid 3H now, thinking it is obviously forcing, and even if partner reads me as 2-3 in the majors, we can always go back to 4S after a raise to 4H.
Martin Henneberger: 3H. This hand has real slam potential opposite as little as: SK J x x Hx x x DK x x x CA x. I can't sell our side short by settling for 3NT just yet. I may have a bigger guess later, but for now, I like 3H to keep the dialogue open.
Christopher Diamond: 3NT. It'd be nice to know what this sequence shows. 5-4-3-1 invitational? That leads to a very awkward auction with a GF. Maybe a direct 3D raise should be an invitation with opener bidding a 4 card heart suit if accepting and this sequence showing a GF.
Larry Meyer: Pass. With 3 card trump support including an honour, a ruffing value, and ragged diamonds, South should have bid 2S. Sounds like pard is 5=4=3=1, and he made a non-forcing bid, so play the safest part score.
Eugene Chan: 3H. 3S rather than 2S would have been more descriptive. Now hope partner can decipher 3H!
Andrew Krywaniuk: 3NT. Partner is presumably showing a diamond honour for his delayed raise.
Hk Ho: 3NT. Tell partner that you can stop the hearts and clubs. If there is 6D, let partner investigate and push.
David Gordon: 3H. Cue bid and cooperating on pard's slam try.
Plarq Liu: Pass. I think partner's 3D is a sign off.
Chris Buchanan: 3H. Partner has a good raise to 3D. I will cue bid the HA for them.
Ig Nieuwenhuis: Pass. Depends on agreements about strength of 2H. Do we have any?
Allan Simon: 3H. 3D is forcing. 3NT if partner rebids 3S.
Kf Tung: 3S. Your CK is dubious but your SQ is a great card. Partner will know that you have long diamonds, 3 good spades and a reluctance for 3N.
Kees Schaafsma: 3H. I hope that North can show a fifth spade.

Moderator: The panel parlay their passed-hand status, and bid their one-bid hand, at the 3-level.
August Boehm: Dbl. . . protected, I hope, by my passed-hand status.
Steve Robinson: Pass. If partner can't reopen, I'm willing to defend against 3H. I don't have enough to bid 3S.
Geoff Hampson: 3S. I have a max with five spades, so this looks right.
Martin Henneberger: 3S. Thank goodness we are a passed hand! 3S now doesn't overstate my length or values by much and takes away any ambiguity that other bids would face. Passing or making a negative double have their own issues.
Stephen Vincent: 3S. Let's hang partner for opening light.
Christopher Diamond: 3S. Didn't open 2S, don't want to pressure a 3rd seat partner and numerous other future excuses to my overbid.
Larry Meyer: Pass. With 8 losers in my hand, we are not going plus on offense unless pard can freely bid again.
Eugene Chan: 3S. Slight overbid but not forcing as I am a passed hand.
Andrew Krywaniuk: 3S. Partner can't get overboard since I am a passed hand.
Hk Ho: 3S. Passing 3H could be -140 or +50/100. Making 3S could be +140. Count pard for 7 LTC for his opening. We have 8 LTC, meaning N/S can make 9 tricks. It's worth the gamble.
David Gordon: 3S. The tolerance in diamonds and being a passed hand made me do it.
Chris Buchanan: Pass. With any non-minimum we will hear from partner again which should help us.
Ig Nieuwenhuis: 3S. I'll gamble that partner has at least 3 spades.
Kf Tung: 3S. You have a passed hand, and you have 5 spades.

Moderator: The vast majority of the panel don't see a problem: they have no majors, they have stoppers, thus 2NT.
Mike Lawrence: Pass. Might beat it a couple. Only 180 for them if they make it. LHO passed, so he doesn't have that good a hand.
Kerri Sanborn: 2NT. Nothing to be embarrassed about.
Sylvia Shi: 2H. Anything could be right. I don't want to bid 2D without at least five diamonds. If partner has only three hearts, I hope they correct to 2S - they don't have to double holding 5 spades and a weak hand because as a passed hand, 2S would be nonforcing.
Martin Henneberger: 2NT. With a 4-3-3-3 14-count, I cannot come up with a better hand description than 2NT.
Stephen Vincent: Pass. At worst, -180 is not too bad a disaster.
Christopher Diamond: 2NT. I detest 2NT but nobody plays there hot at IMPs anyway so I can blame partner when we go down in game.
Larry Meyer: 2NT. Deny a 4-card major and show my club stopper.
Eugene Chan: 2NT. An original 1NT (strong) would avoid this problem. Only a beginner would open this 1D.
Andrew Krywaniuk: 2NT. This is likely to get us overboard, but no other option is appealing.
Hk Ho: Pass. It appears that N/S do not have a game. Hope to collect +300. If only +100, the deficit is only 1 or 2 IMP.
David Gordon: 2H. Intend the following actions over pard's various bids: Pass over 2S; raise 2NT to 3NT; bid 3NT over 3C or 3H; Pass 3D.
Plarq Liu: 2NT. No hearts or spades.
Chris Buchanan: 2NT. Ugh! Best option available.
Ig Nieuwenhuis: 2NT. Not happy, but best description.
Allan Simon: 2NT. Seems clear-cut.
Kf Tung: 2NT. Start searching for 3N. Your hand is too good for a timid 2D rebid.

Moderator: Another preempt, another marginal hand.
Roger Lee: Pass. Obviously double could be a huge winner, but my hand is a major disappointment if partner pulls to a major or passes; and if partner bids 3NT, it still might be no bargain.
Martin Henneberger: Dbl. When choosing among alternatives, I prefer the call with the most flexibility. Double allows many good things to happen for our side, including a penalty pass or 3NT by partner.
Stephen Vincent: Pass. You have to draw a line somewhere.
Christopher Diamond: Pass. I'd double me, but other people have decent hands for 3D here. If nonvul game is on for us, it's not a big loss if they're down a few.
Larry Meyer: Dbl. Assuming pard bids a major, he will be able to trump diamonds in the hand with shorter trumps.
Eugene Chan: 4C. Balancing action at favourable vulnerability is a no brainer.
Andrew Krywaniuk: Dbl. Partner didn't deny a 5-card suit.
Hk Ho: 4C. A playable suit. Double is over-stretched. Hope the loss is less than 110.
David Gordon: Pass. Not quite enough.
Plarq Liu: Pass. No way to act. If West has clubs and I have diamonds, I can bid my suit. Now I will just fold.
Chris Buchanan: Dbl. Keeping it open for partner.
Ig Nieuwenhuis: Pass. Why turn a possible plus into an almost certain minus, especially at IMPs?
Allan Simon: Dbl. Partner is waiting with a penalty pass!
Kf Tung: Dbl. If partner selects 3 of major it will always be right. If partner passes you can collect 200 or more. If partner bids 3N you can give him enough tricks. If partner bids 4H or 4S you will make more often than not.
