Moderator: A total of 67 people participated in this poll. Thank you! This set starts off with controversy. Some feel double should be takeout, except when it's penalty. Some feel 2NT can't be anything but minors, except when it's invitational. Because of the shaky ground, many go the safe route and pass, or try 3, a likely playable spot.
David Gordon: Dbl. Since I denied 4 spades with my 1NT bid, this should be for the minors. I would like 1 of my spades to be a heart but life is short.
Brian Zietman: 3NT. Are we going anywhere else?
Bob Todd: 3. Not vul at MPs I take my shot. 2N and dbl are out of the picture.
Dan Jacob: 3. Anything could be right: Pass, or Dbl.
Eugene Chan: Dbl. Obviously for takeout, since 1NT denied having four spades.
Martin Henneberger: Dbl. In my /humble/ opinion, double here can't be penalty as I've already denied spades with 1NT. This must be take out for the minors. The problem with 2NT here for the minors is it could be construed as natural and probably should be.
Mike Roberts: 2NT. Can't be natural; I'd double with that hand. So unusual.
John Gillespier: Dbl. I've denied much in spades so this should be take out but pard can convert.
Tim Francis-Wright: 3. 2NT isn't for the minors, as far as I know.
Ji Liu: 2NT. Minors.
Beverley Candlish: Dbl. By South not bidding 3, he is showing he doesn't have support in hearts. South should double and trust that North will realize he is asking North to bid his best minor suit.
Paul Mcmullin: Pass. You might THINK we probably have a minor fit, but MY partners are always 3-6-2-2.
Kf Tung: Dbl. Double under the bidder = takeout. Bid 2NT if K 4 instead of T 4.
Larry Meyer: Pass. Don't want to wind up playing either of my minors at the 3-level.
Stuart Carr: Dbl. It can't be penalty, so partner could picture a hand with the minors.
Ranjan Bhaduri: Dbl. Take-out double ... shows the two unbid suits.
Joel Forssell: 2NT. Minors.
Andrew Krywaniuk: Dbl. This has to be competitive for the minors, since I have denied heart or spade length.

Moderator: Partner's 2 is forcing for 1 round, so Pass would be quite a position to take. Do we bid 3 without a stopper? Do we raise spades with only two? Do we punt with a cue-bid? Or do we pattern out?
David Gordon: 3. Natural and forward going.
Brian Zietman: 2NT. I think this descibes our hand accurately.
Bob Todd: 3. KQ is better than xxx. While the hearts are good, spades should be a sensible contract.
Dan Jacob: 3. Not a lot of choices.
Eugene Chan: 3. Partner will expect another trump but shouldn't be too disappointed.
Martin Henneberger: 3. The ambiguous cue bid, used to force with no clear direction and no other proper rebid. Why guess to raise spades now when pard could also have hearts?
Mike Roberts: 3. Seems like a good middle of the road action.
John Gillespier: 3. I don't get how partner may be better than an invite but 3 just in case they are.
Tim Francis-Wright: 3. This is the best of an awful set of choices, I think.
Ji Liu: 2NT. Continue the bidding.
Beverley Candlish: 3. . . asking for a club stopper. If partner doesn't have a club stopper, he can set the contract.
Paul Mcmullin: 3. I assume Invitational or better means forcing 1 round - this should be an all-around tell-me-more cue-bid.
Kf Tung: 3. If pard has extra strength he will bid game in 3NT or 4.
Larry Meyer: 3. K Q is as good as 3-card support.
Ranjan Bhaduri: 3. Show the solid heart stoppers, to see if game is in NT or spades.
Andrew Krywaniuk: 3. I am not strong enough for a game-forcing 3. The club weakness is a big worry.

Moderator: Many respondents complained that they would have doubled on the first round. While their point is well taken, the posed auction leaves you better placed. Partner is showing spade tolerance with good diamonds. While many simply place the contract in 4, the majority can visualize the slam and start with a 4 bid.
David Gordon: 4NT. Keycard for diamonds. If zero then 6. If 1 then ask for the queen.
Brian Zietman: 4. If partner has the Q and/or the A Q then we are in business.
Dan Jacob: 4. For starters I think that South should start with dbl. xx, xx, AQxxxx, xxx and 6 is a good proposition.
Stephen Vincent: 4. Too strong to overcall: this hand should double then bid spades.
Eugene Chan: 6. Impossible to recover from wimpy 1 overcall. Might be cold for 7!
Susan Peters: 4. Would have dbl'd rather than overcall 1.
Martin Henneberger: 4. Wow I have a huge hand for partner but I need more info. A 4 bid will get that info with regards to their spade holding or a club bid. I will have to decide next whether we belong in 6, 6, or even a grand slam!
Mike Roberts: 5NT. I need to know if a 2 opener would be weak, but 7 is good opp. xx xx AQxxxx xxx. I would have started with a double.

Beverley Candlish: 4NT. South has 19 points and North has freely bid 3. South should investigate for a slam in spades.
Paul Mcmullin: 4. Advance cue bid - I'll show 5 over 4 and bid 6 over 5.
Kf Tung: 4. 7NT is palpable. If you make 7 then 7NT will be there. A very good chance to set up the spades for 7 to make. Bid 4, trying to get as much room for exploration as possible.
Larry Meyer: 4. Would prefer to double their 1 instead of overcalling 1. Now must bid game myself because pard doesn't know about my strength.
Stuart Carr: 7. Would like to do key card in diamonds. Is 5 exclusion key card?
Ranjan Bhaduri: 4. Fishing for slam.
Craig T. Wilson: 4. If North bids spades next, I would explore for slam.
Andrew Krywaniuk: 4NT. Partner's delayed diamond bid ought to be fit showing. Blackwood or cue-bidding would both be effective here.

Bob Todd: 2. 2 or 4 are both reasonable and get both majors in play.
Dan Jacob: 1. I will have a chance to bid hearts later unless it goes all pass in which case I didn't miss much. 2 is a bit of an overbid at MP.

Martin Henneberger: 2. I think this hand is worth 2 bids and an invite in a major, therefore I will start with 2. This promises another bid, so I will raise 2 of partner's major to 3 next round.
Mike Roberts: 2. Where are the diamonds? It's essential to find a 4-4 fit; if the auction continues 3-P-P, I'd be badly placed if I had bid 2.

Tim Francis-Wright: 1. I must be missing something here. I'm not strong enough to bid 2, so I'll just plan to bid 2 next round if I can.

David Gordon: 4NT. If partner cannot whack 4 then make a responsive 4NT bid.
Brian Zietman: 5. If partner can't double then this looks like a good spot.
Bob Todd: 5. Partner has no wasted values but 5 is still enough.
Eugene Chan: Dbl. May be the only available plus. Partner has a last chance to pass or correct.
Martin Henneberger: Dbl. Double is my pick but won't be a popular choice. When I bid 4 partner was in the dark as to why. Double now should express the why. Partner should never play this as penalty as I am under the bidder and is now well placed to bid or pass.
Mike Roberts: 5. Not liking this. Short spades good, but weak hand and short hearts bad.
John Gillespier: Dbl. The sure plus (I hope) vs a real chance of a minus.
Tim Francis-Wright: 5. Doubling can't be right here.
Beverley Candlish: Dbl. If North cannot tolerate the double he can bid 5.

Moderator: You offered up two suits to partner, and they chose their own suit. The question is: how many hearts do you want to play? The Pass-ers are happy to have found safe haven; the 3 bidders are raising based on values; the 4 bidders are raising based on tricks.
David Gordon: 3. Stretch for a raise.
Brian Zietman: 3. Interested in 4 partner?
Dan Jacob: 3. Good enough for a raise and if nothing else it takes away the level from opps.
Eugene Chan: 4. Jump to game identifies spade shortage in my hand. I'll take my chances that opp's won't decide to save.
Martin Henneberger: 4. With all these controls and ruffing value this hand is just too good to do anything else. Yes there will be a lot of 3 bidders who will miss their cold 22 point game too often.
Mike Roberts: 4. Slam is unlikely, and game certain. Why horse around?
John Gillespier: 3. Shows short spades or 2-3 more hcp's with shortish spades. Pards can work it out.
Tim Francis-Wright: 3. I'm a bit worried that no one bid spades here, but I worry more that West will balance with 2 if I don't shut her out.
Beverley Candlish: 4. South's hand is not that strong. North has shown no extra values other than hearts.
Paul Mcmullin: 3. Partner should be able to picture the singleton spade and re-evaluate.
