If a class reading is to be downloaded, the link I provide in the
schedule will take you to the description page of the article. The description page
provides context for the article: Where it was published, who wrote it, when it
was published, the abstract, and other information. Take a moment to scan this
before downloading.
Somewhere on the page (it varies with the publisher), you'll see a link with "PDF" in its title.
Clicking that link will download the article to your machine.
How the download process works depends upon whether your machine is directly connected to the Internet
using an SFU address or whether you are signing in from your home using an Internet Service Provider (ISP)
such as Shaw or Telus.
- If you are downloading from a machine using an SFU address:
- No special effort should be required. Just click on the PDF link and start downloading.
- If you are downloading from a machine signed on to Shaw, Telus, or another ISP:
- Use the SFU Library as your default proxy server: Set your browser's proxy to "proxy.sfu.ca", port 8080.
However, for some ISPs (I'm not sure which ones), they ask you to set their own proxy and you cannot override it. In that case, you can
set a proxy for a single download, by writing the server into the URL. For example, if you are asked to download
"http://doi.acm.org/10.1145/67449.67497", rewrite the URL as "http://doi.acm.org.proxy.lib.sfu.ca/10.1145/67449.67497".
This will allow you to download that article, without resetting the proxy ID of your browser.
