Final review paper
Turn in: A six-page, double-spaced paper. Length does not count figures and references. Also turn in your
draft with this final version.
For the final review, in class Tuesday, Oct 3, I will give each of you a sheet. It will have two recommendations for changes
in the final review. One recommendation will be for an improvement in your writing. The other recommendation
will be for an improvement in your analysis.
In addition to the personalized recommendations, there are several recommendations for everyone:
- Remove your descriptions of the authors' background and the audience. That was useful information
for constructing your draft, but does not need to begin your final version. But
consider how this information might inform your analysis and how parts of it might be moved there. For example, if the authors of your
paper (or some of the authors) were performance artists, how might that have affected their analysis? Did it make them
more open to some conclusions, but less aware to others?
Bring these topcs in only if necessary.
- For the draft, I paid no attention to spelling, punctuation, or other details of presentation. That's
appropriate for a draft. However, make the final version as clean as you can. (But I still don't want
cover sheets.)
- Note (I said it above, but it bears repetition), that you have two more pages in this version, if you want them.
- "et al." is written with a period after "al" (it is an abbreviation of Latin "alia", meaning "others").
- Do not use contractions (for example, "there's" for "there is") in formal writing.
- Do not copy text from a document or Web site without putting it in quotes and attributing it.
Recommended writing process
Do your revision in several sessions over a period of days, rather than in one long session.
Begin with your draft text. I think all your reviews had good structure and
successfully summarized the paper you read. No need to do a completely
rewrite. First make the revisions I suggest. Then set it aside a day,
and come back to it after a night's sleep. Reread it, then start to
revise the paper as a whole to make it cohere.
