Course description Computer graphics provides the tools required to interact with computers through graphical user interfaces, to visualize data and processes, and to create animations for communication, education, and entertainment. This course aims to provide an introduction to these tools and apply them to some typical problems.
  • basic raster graphics for drawing 2D primitives, antialiasing
  • 2D and 3D geometrical transformations, 3D projections/viewing
  • polygonal and hierarchial models
  • hidden-surface removal
  • basic rendering techniques (colour, shading, raytracing)
  • interaction techniques
Prerequisite CMPT 201 and MATH 232. A mimimum grade of C is required in all prerequisite courses
Course texts Required
  • Computer Graphics: Principles and Practice (2nd Edition), Foley, vanDam, Feiner & Hughes, Addison Wesley
Recommended
  • Principles of Digital Image Synthesis, Andrew S. Glassner, Volume 1+2, 2nd edition (the first edition has too many errors!), Morgan Kaufmann, 1995. errata page!
  • Advanced Animation and Rendering Techniques: Theory and Practice, Alan Watt and Mark Watt, Addison-Wesley, 1992.
  • Graphics Gems I, II, III, IV, V, Academic Press, 1990-1995
Grading Students must attain an overall passing grade on the weighted average of exams in the course in order to obtain a clear pass (C or better).
  • Exams (65%)
    • Mid-term: 25%
    • Exam: 40%
  • Assignments (35%)

If the midterm or final exam is missed, the student MUST contact the instructor within 24 hours to make alternate arrangements and produce medical documentation. Failure to contact the professor will result in a grade of zero.

Assignments will be handed out in class and posted on the class web page.

Assignment deadlines are strictly enforced. Unless otherwise specified, assignments will be penalized 15% for each late day. No extensions will be given without medical documentation.
