Friday meeting - CFI letter of intent

Ljiljana and I are planning to submit a letter of intent for a CFI grant
to fund a network modelling and performance analysis lab. The goal is to
build a research lab to train graduate students in network modelling and
performance analysis. I see it as a complement to Ljiljana's current lab
which focusses more on simulation and an important resource for our young
but enthusiastic Network Modelling Group. The initial idea is to ask for
hardware and software to study optical and/or high speed LANs, but these
are only initial ideas and I am hoping that some brainstorming will produce
something more concrete. I am hoping that we can put together an application
for between $1M and $2M, but it is too early to predict the amount with
any accuracy.

The grant application process takes nearly a year. The actual work of
writing one of these proposals and steering it through the various stages
will be done by a small number of people but I would like to involve all
interested parties in the brainstorming. Graduate student input is valuable
and is very welcome. It could also be an interesting educational experience
for graduate students who rarely see the inside of the grant application
process.

The meeting of the Network Discussion Group this Friday (January 11) will be
an information and brainstorming session about the CFI application. I will
be inviting some resource people to the meeting although I do not know if
they will be able to attend on such short notice.

Our meeting will start at the usual time (11:30) in the usual place
(the Algorithms Lab - ASB 10820) and will last as long as people are
interested (but no later than 1:30).

Joe.
