Title:
Formal Language, Natural Language and Biological Sequences

Speaker:
Anoop Sarkar

Abstract:
I will give a brief overview of the use of formal language
theory in the analysis of human language (the natural languages
as opposed to the programming languages). I will motivate
the use of structural descriptions and in particular the
grammar formalism of Tree Adjoining Grammars from different
perspectives involving the description of natural language
using formal languages. Finally, I will give some examples from
biological structure prediction and show how the same treatment
seems to have a similar payoff.
