An excellent article Image Compression - from DCT to Wavelets : A Review can be
found at

A graphics-based demonstration of the wavelet transform is
online at
http://www.cs.sfu.ca/CC/365/mark/material/misc/Kilthau.Wavelet.Demo/
There are two programs included, one to demonstrate the 1D wavelet
transform and the other for 2D image compression.
In the 1D program, one simply draws the curve that is to be
transformed.
