Running Ubuntu on a Windows Virtual Machine

The following describes one way of running Ubuntu on a virtual machine on
Windows.

#. Save a copy of the latest `Ubuntu ISO
   <http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop>`_ to a convenient folder on your
   computer.

#. Download and install `VMware Player 6 <https://my.vmware.com/web/vmware/fre
   e#desktop_end_user_computing/vmware_player/6_0>`_. This version is free for
   personal use.

#. Run VMware and create a new Ubuntu virtual machine using the ISO file you
   downloaded from step 1.

#. When you have the virtual machine running, open a terminal window and
   follow the instructions on Canvas_ for installing software.eded packages.

#. The editor I like to use in class is `Sublime Text 3
   <http://www.sublimetext.com/3>`_. It runs on Mac, Windows, and Linux. While
   it has an unlimited free trial use period, it is software that you are
   supposed to eventually pay for.

#. You may want to browsse the Ubuntu Software Center for other software. For
   instance, various programming- oriented text editors and IDEs are
   available, such as emacs, vim, Bluefish, CodeBlocks, etc.
